Burr Oak, Wisconsin

Burr Oak, WI

Burr Oak, Wisconsin, is a Farmington community alongside Mindoro and Stevenstown. This township, located in La Crosse County, was organized in 1854.  As a part of the Coulee Region, the area is surrounded by rich farmland and nature preserves.

While Burr Oak is considered a small community, it's a beautiful town that shares its name with one of Wisconsin's most iconic oak species. This tree can be found throughout eastern North America but is found heavily throughout Wisconsin. The acorns of these trees are the largest for North American oaks and are an important part of the diet for many of the surrounding wildlife.

Burr Oak sits just south of the Black River Savanna State Natural Area. Designated a State Natural Area in 2008, the site is perfect for visiting birdwatchers and wildlife enthusiasts. This nature reserve is home to diverse bird life, such as barred owls, willow flycatchers, clay-colored sparrows, and more. While there aren't camping sites or picnic areas, hunting and fishing are popular activities. The area is best reached by canoe and features several hiking trails for adventurous groups.

Luckily, other nearby parks within La Crosse County are open to the public, providing hiking trails and picnic areas for groups and families to visit. Some of these parks have educational trails, picnic spaces, and shelter pavilions for parties and events. There are cross-country ski trails and snowmobile trails to visit in the winter. These extend over 130 miles of well-maintained land and provide access to the Coulee Region's most scenic river valleys and bluffs.

If you're looking to learn while participating in fun activities and events, the Children's Museum of La Crosse is an interactive museum. Don't let the name fool you, though. Visitors of all ages can find something fun to do when touring the three floors of hands-on exhibits. While there are programs that you can join to have a guided tour experience, guests are encouraged to take photos and videos themselves as they explore the learning center. You can also have birthday parties or other events here.

Small businesses have also been thriving in the area. Take advantage of the snow and ski trails by renting equipment from locally owned BS Motorsports, or spend an evening with friends and a drink at Muddy Creek. Family Schnauzer Babies is also a well-known local dog breeder that connects furry friends with a forever home they can trust.
